Hey there! Here’s the first page of my first full-length issue of Steamroller Man, originally published online in 2018.
Last week I wrote about how the 1966 Batman TV show influenced the latest page I made for issue #3, and coincidentally, the page above also wears that influence on its sleeve. My alliterative narration at the top of the page deliberately takes a cue from the way every episode of Batman would start, with a portentous, scene-setting voice-over provided by the show’s executive producer, William Dozier. (Dozier apparently auditioned a number of actors for the role but, not finding exactly the kind of sound he wanted, ended up doing it himself!)
Interestingly, the TV show’s voice-overs were influenced by the narration captions found in Batman comic books of the early- to mid-sixties, so the wheel of influence continues to roll on as I try to inject that flavor into Steamroller Man! From comics, to TV, and back to comics again!
This is actually the second version of this page, and for paid subscribers, I’ve shared the original version, along with pictures of various stages of my art process on both versions, at the bottom of this post! Subscriptions are $5/month (the lowest amount Substack allows) but a yearly subscription is only $30 - half the price! So please consider signing up if you like my work and enjoy seeing behind the curtain!
If you’re a free subscriber, thank you for being here! I hope you enjoyed this look back at some of my earlier work!
Keep Rolling!
Matt
